The national curriculum looks to ‘promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment’ (DofE 2013). In addition to this, we offer verbal reasoning for our 11+ students.
Verbal reasoning
This is the ability to understand and analytically work through problems expressed in words. Pupils are taught how to extract, evaluate, summarise and successfully draw implications from text.
Book club
“Show me a family of readers, and I will show you the people who move the world.”
Napoléon Bonaparte
Evidence suggests that children who read often develop a broader vocabulary, increase their general knowledge and understanding and perform better at tests than those who do not. Reading is probably more likely to contribute to how well a child does at school than their social or economic background.
We offer our pupils as part of their english programme, dedicated lessons to reading and reading comprehension. Our standalone book-club is also an opportunity for our pupils to build on their critical thinking, constructive debating and public speaking capabilities.
